The main objective of the project “With knowledge towards the European Union” is to increase the level of awareness of high school students about the European institutions and European integrations process. By resolving the two identified problems related to low levels of interest and knowledge of young people about the European Union, an increased level of awareness of young people about European institutions and European integration process will be achieved. The target groups of this project are students of secondary schools from 12 municipalities in Montenegro. These groups will comprise of about 400 students.
Indirect group consists of high school professors, who will be able to participate in the workshops and become a part of them. In addition to high school professors, general public of Montenegro represents another indirect target group. As a significant part of population that does not receive enough attention, and which certainly should have an important role in the integration process of Montenegro, these groups should be animated and informed in the right way, thus enhancing their participation in the integrations process. This will additionally influence training of administrative personnel that will be dedicated to future issues of European Union, which at the moment is one of the main deficits of Montenegro.
The method that will be used during work with high school students is informal learning, implemented through peer learning, training and workshops, where students of selected high schools will learn from each other. Such learning method represents most appropriate way of transferring knowledge between students. The project will be implemented in secondary schools in 12 municipalities in Montenegro. In such a way, equal participation of all high schools will be achieved. Up to now, CEMI has with the support of Germany and the Embassy of the United Kingdom, implemented projects that were geared to high school students, with the aim of intensifying their participation in the European integrations process. Survey that was conducted, points to low levels of awareness of high school students when it comes to functioning of EU. Namely, when asked whether one believes to understand the functioning of the EU system, only 19.62% declared positive answer, while 80.38% answered negatively.
The results clearly inform about low level of awareness of young people about European Union and their inability, conditioned by lack of information, to form any attitude on European integrations process, or to recognize their own role in this process. This is supported by the fact that high school program is not dedicated enough to deal with issues related to functioning of EU. Namely, secondary institutions lack professional staff that would teach about these issues, resulting in lack of students’ initiative to improve this situation.
The aim of the project
Increased level of awareness of youth on the European institutions and European integrations process
Objective 1
Increased level of high school students’ knowledge, using the method of peer education about the functioning of the European Union and EU integration
Objective 2
Increased level of high school students’ interest about the functioning of the EU and EU integrations, by printing and distributing the manual “Get to know the European Union.”
Target group of this project are students of 12 secondary schools in Montenegro.
In lieu with the fact that Montenegro is currently in the process of European integrations and that young people are carriers of this process, and that, on the other hand, among considerable majority of students of selected secondary schools rules both lack of involvement and lack of awareness on these issues, demonstrates that this target group requires education about important aspects of European integration. Furthermore, the results of already conducted researches inform about low levels of involvement and knowledge of young people about the process of integrations and this project aims to increase these levels.
The project will encompass secondary schools from 12 municipalities in Montenegro, and will include approximately 400 students of the second and third grades of selected secondary schools. Of course, when choosing a students of secondary schools it will be taken into account the gender equality of this target group.
